Disc Herniation Advise

slipped disc relaxing posture

A herniated disc in the lower back is one of the most painful events. Sharp pain down the leg or in the back that prevents us from functioning. Not walking, sitting, and sometimes even lying down. There is no escape from the pain. The first thing to check is whether we have incontinence of the lower sphincters, genitals, and anus. If this is the case, it is advisable to report it to a doctor immediately and, in general, it is advisable to hear a medical opinion.

What is Not advisable?

I have been an expert in herniated disc rehabilitation for over 18 years and have treated hundreds of herniated disc cases and here is the worst thing versus the best thing you can do. The worst thing is to continue to function normally and especially to walk or sit despite the pain. Because there is usually severe radiating pain to one leg, we can only walk with a limp. If we do this too much, the body will start to curve-in our posture to compensate for the pain. What will happen is that this curve will continue over time and it will be much harder to get out of this position and it will take more practice time. So instead, it is advisable to stand and walk less.

What is advisable?

It is advisable to lie on your back, but not in bed! It is advisable to lie on your back on as hard a surface as possible: such as on a carpet or exercise mat, with your feet on the seat of a chair so that your thighs are perpendicular to the ground, and your calves on the seat of the chair so that they are parallel to the ground. Use a pillow for your head if needed.

This position gives your back a rest and maintains the natural S-shape that it is supposed to be in. In this position, it is recommended to practice relaxing breathing. You can stay in this position for a long time and usually do not feel pain. It is recommended not to lie in bed because it is soft and distorts the shape of the spine. After a few days, the pain will subside a bit, and then it is recommended to start rehabilitating the body through special exercises. So to summarize:
In the case of a herniated disc in the lower back, it is not advisable to walk a lot, sit or lie in bed. It is advisable to lie on a hard surface with the knees bent and resting on a chair.
